Mike says In a word, urgency. A watch is issued when hurricane or tropical storm conditions are possible within 36 hours. A warning is issued when those conditions are expected within 24 hours.

Mike says a warming of the subtropical Pacific Ocean surface waters that increases vertical wind shear at high altitudes, which help prevent storms from developing. This was the main element during the middle and end of the 2006 Atlantic Hurricane season. It is possible that an El Nino may shorten the 2009 season.

Mike says an Atlantic Basin tropical cyclone that develops near the Cape Verde Islands just off the west coast of Africa and becomes a hurricane before reaching the Caribbean Sea. The peak of the Cape Verde season is August and September and a typical year would have between one and five with an average of around two.

Yes. Storm surge is the rush of seawater associated with the high winds of an approaching tropical storm or hurricane. Tidal surge refers to the rise in water associated with high tide. Flooding will increase when storm surge and high tide coincide.

Obviously, perishables have long since spoiled. Canned goods are safe indefinitely. Prepared meals that dont require refridgeration are good until the expiration date. Tip: Most of these meals are edible at room temp, but id they come in black containers, you can safely put them in the sun, black side up, and warm them.
